8 Villains The Batman Should Use For Its Rogues Gallery

Ben Affleck may be out as Batman, but Matt Reeves' The Batman is still happening. Reeves recently revealed his vision for the project, and promised DC fans it will be an adventure unlike any audiences have seen before. Specifically, the director is hoping to make a noir-style feature that will show the Dark Knight utilizing a skill he doesn't often fully utilize on the big screen: his detective skills.

Reeves is also planning on featuring a number of antagonists, a.k.a. a Rogues Gallery, with Batman potentially running into a slew of villains before this adventure is over. With those parameters in mind, we've crafted a list of eight villains that would be great for such a story, and are capable of cooking up a mystery that would put The Dark Knight's detective skills to the test.

HushHush is not only a villain that has yet to debut in a live-action Batman film, he's also incredibly resourceful. He's especially good at collaborating with the other villains of Gotham City, or at least manipulating them into doing the things he wants. He'll do whatever it takes to exact vengeance on Bruce Wayne, even if that means deceiving some foes that would make for powerful enemies in the future.

Hush has been a favorite villain the Batman fanbase has frequently wished to see on the big screen, and introducing him in The Batman could neatly lay out his origin. If the mystery was based around his actual identity, then Batman could slowly discover the person pulling the strings was none other than his former childhood friend, Tommy Elliott. The reveal wouldn't be all that shocking for audiences up on comic lore, but might rock The Dark Knight's world.

PenguinOne of Batman's most iconic villains, Penguin is a character that has popped up frequently on both television and video games over the years. At the same time, though, it's been over twenty years since the silver screen saw Danny DeVito portray the villain with a performance in Batman Returns that, while good, could be better with a different interpretation. All I'm asking for is the next Oswald Cobblepot doesn't command an army of penguins to blow people's erogenous zones sky high. Is that too much to ask?

It's worth mentioning that The Batman will likely feature The Penguin in some way, as rumors have swirled about the villains inclusion. Who may play him is still a mystery, although Josh Gad has done some frequent trolling over the years that's been about as good as a promotional campaign for a role can be. Will Matt Reeves actually bring him in to play the villain?

Ventriloquist & ScarfaceVentriloquist & Scarface are one of the weirder Batman foes out there, and that's really saying something in a roster that includes characters like Joker and Clock King. Having the meek and quiet Arnold Wesker commanding Scarface (or is it the other way around) would be bonkers, or as Scarface would say it, "gonkers." Is there room for this criminal duo in The Batman?

Anything's possible, and including them would mean The Batman gets the honor of establishing the two's cinematic story. Granted, it's a story that's been changed up quite a few times in the DC continuity, with different Ventriloquists and the question whether Scarface is an identity of Arnold Wesker or a doll possessed by the spirit of a gangster. There probably won't be time for lots of character background considering how many villains are planned, but who knows?

Mad HatterAny Batman adventure where Mad Hatter is involved is a trip, usually because this mind-controlling villain is often taking Batman on a ride. Whether it's through elaborate dreams he's constructed to reveal the hero's identity, or mind control tactics he's used to bend others to his will, Mad Hatter is always playing head games. Could he possibly be the mastermind working behind the scenes in The Batman?

Its possible, and Mad Hatter's inclusion would allow for a kookier type of film without making it mandatory that all future films be equally as kooky. Imagine Batman going through this intense mystery that makes very little sense only to discover he's been asleep the whole time and Mad Hatter is orchestrating the whole thing? That's some Inception-level trickery in a superhero film, which doesn't happen often.

Mr. FreezeArnold Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze looked aesthetically pleasing, and had Batman & Robin been a better film, he might've given a good enough performance that Batman fans would say can't be replicated. Obviously, that wasn't the case, and many would be thrilled if The Batman featured the brilliantly sad story of Victor Fries and not a villain who's only real flash of brilliance was how many ice puns he could make.

Batman & Robin may be the reason Hollywood never makes Mr. Freeze a main Batman villain ever again. That wouldn't be the worst thing, though, as the villain may shine brighter in a supporting role like he did in the game Arkham City. Give us a scenario where Fries and Bats are forced to collaborate to serve both their interests! Also, can we get a notable actress to cameo as Nora?

Calendar ManNot all of Batman's Rogues are blessed with great names or gimmicks, and while Calendar Man's name is lame, he's cooler than he initially seems. Julian Gregory Day is a brilliant villain who plans all of his major misdeeds and wrongdoings around days of the week, anniversaries, or holidays. His dedication to significant events and themes makes him a perfect candidate for a detective-driven Batman, and an amazing antagonist.

Of course, the court of public opinion would eat a modern Calendar Man alive if he donned the suit seen in the picture above, so hopefully Matt Reeves opts for a more modern take on the character. Plus, including him leaves open the opportunity for yet another Batman film to take place on a holiday. The superhero world doesn't have enough holiday themed adventures, so perhaps The Batman can add to the list.

Carmine FalconeA movie with multiple Batman Rogues wouldn't feel right without at least one of Gotham's mob families involved, and who better than the iconic Carmine Falcone to make an appearance? Unless we're dealing with a bunch of low-level villains Carmine probably wouldn't be the one calling the shots in this larger plot, but that's ok. He can be an enforcer, and potentially bent into cooperating in the interest of another one of Gotham City's more dangerous villains.

The character of Carmine Falcone is typically prime real estate for an older actor to sit in the role (he was previously portrayed by Tom Wilkinson in Batman Begins), but what if The Batman went with someone younger? Someone like Oscar Isaac would be cool to see in the role, and he's been rumored to be involved in the upcoming feature in some way. Could this be the role he's on board for?

Professor PygAh, Professor Pyg: another one of Gotham's deranged lunatics who's weird as hell and incredibly terrifying. This guy kidnaps people and performs radical surgery on them to turn them into "Dollotrons" that have hideous faces and do his bidding. Adding him to The Batman would certainly make for a darker film, even if it wouldn't be a mystery he was the one behind the Dollotrons.

Professor Pyg would be a great bit villain to include in the adventure, and one that Batman could run through rather quickly on his way to the next big battle. That's probably as long as most film goers may want to spend watching the villain anyway, as scenes that show intense facial disfigurement would be tough to watch.

3 Horror Franchises That Need A Halloween-Style Refresh

The new Halloween is no less than the 11th film to have that title. The franchise has been sequeled to death and even remade, but the new Halloween, which is the third of those 11 movies to share that exact title, does something quite interesting: it completely ignores almost everything about the franchise.

Even though Jamie Lee Curtis was in some of those sequels, none of them exist as far as the new film is concerned. There's the original movie and then this one, and that's it. This gives the new movie an immense amount of freedom as it isn't bogged down by existing canon, and the movie uses that freedom to great effect.

It works out so well for the new Halloween that we can't help but think that other horror franchises could benefit by being given the same treatment. Here are three franchises that would benefit by having all the sequels stabbed through the heart and having the bones burned.

Friday the 13thThe Friday the 13th franchise has a lot in common with Halloween. Both series deal with masked silent killers that have been given more sequels than we know what to do with. Both have also been remade. The thing about Friday the 13th is that almost everything that we think of when we think of the franchise was born in the sequels, not the original.

Spoiler alert if you haven't seen the original Friday the 13th or the opening of Scream, but the killer in the first movie isn't Jason Voorhees, but his mother. Jason died as a child at Camp Crystal Lake and dear old mom blames the camp counselors for being too busy fooling around to rescue her boy from drowning. The end of the first film gives a hint that maybe somehow Jason is alive, but that's all it is, a hint.

If we take that movie as a starting point and then try to make a sequel, we can do almost anything we want with it. Jason Voorhees doesn't even need to actually be a character at all. You could set the movie in the modern day and have Camp Crystal Lake once again reopening following the murders from decades ago. But of course, the killings would be back as well. Who's doing it and why? I don't know. I'm not here to write the entire screenplay. Not for free anyway.

If you do want to bring Jason back for this new Friday the 13th, you certainly can, but you have the complete freedom to remake Jason anyway you want. Give him a new look or even a new attitude. A wise taking Jason who quips as he kills? That's probably actually a bad idea, but you could do it, is my point.

A Nightmare On Elm StreetNo horror franchise got quite so out of hand during its run than the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. While Freddy never became the hero of his story as many movie monsters have (because child killer), the latter films got pretty ridiculous, a far cry from the truly horrifying original.

The original A Nightmare on Elm Street saw teen girl Nancy seemingly defeat Freddy by drawing him into the real world where he had no supernatural power. It ended with Nancy waking to find all her dead friends somehow alive once more. In the final seconds, we learned that this itself was just a dream and that Freddy was apparently still very much alive.

This is the perfect place from which to launch a new film. The question you have to ask is, if the movie ended inside a dream, how much of what we saw was "real?" The answer is, however much you need to be.

If Freddy successfully kills Nancy in the final scene of the original movie, then he has seemingly killed all the children of the people who killed him, which was his supposed goal the first time around. So why would he come back? Has he been brought back for a purpose? Maybe his spirit is being used by somebody as a weapon to kill people in their dreams.

If Nancy survives the first film, what happened to her? How has she survived Freddy for all these years, and what has brought them together again. Or, do you simply have a new actress as Nancy wake up from the dream and pick up the new sequel immediately following the original, continuing the fight. The plan to kill Freddy clearly didn't work. Why not?

However, the story is handled, you could have some real fun with modern special effects in a modern Nightmare on Elm Street story. It could be the horror movie version of Inception.

HellraiserHellraiser is a franchise ten films deep with the most recent entry being released earlier this year. No, really.

I found the original Hellraiser to be an utterly terrifying movie, and the sequels never really lived up to that. Similarly to the Friday the 13th franchise, most of the lore that's associated with the franchise came in the sequels, with the original film just being about a puzzle box that opened a gateway to some sort of hell dimension when the terrible cenobites promised the opener of the box all forms of sadistic pleasures.

The sequels made one particular cenobite, Pinhead, a star character, and it humanized the cenobites, literally revealing them to have once been human. All of that can be done away with once we send the sequels to hell. The cenobites don't need names or personality, they're murderous movie monsters and are better that way.

A new sequel can be started up in a simple and obvious way, with the puzzle box being found and opened by somebody new. A new film wouldn't even technically need to connect to the original film beyond the basic concepts, though it's not really a sequel if it doesn't. Once again (because horror movies have tropes), this movie could see its own "final girl" Kirsty Cotton return decades later. Whether she's fighting the cenobites or whether she has succumbed to the temptation of the box, the idea here is that the new movie should focus on human characters and their desire for/battle with the box. The cenobites can be interesting creations, but they should only be monsters to contend with.

No one knows this better than bestselling author Stephen King, who not only has had a tremendous amount of his works adapted for film and television, but isnt particularly shy about whether or not he approves of the changes made. So seeing him give an official OK to Ellie Creed switching places with Gage as the child who dies to kick off the storys later plot developments seems to fit with the authors overall approval of the film in general.

In an email response to an inquiry towards this point, King provided the following remarks as to how he felt about the overall alteration of Gage and Ellies fates:

I thought the change was OK. Both versions the old one, where Gage dies, and the new one, where Ellie dies result in the same chain of events. I dont necessarily think one version of the story is better, but Im sure the directors found it easier to work with a girl zombie than with a toddler zombie.

Stephen Kings acceptance of the change isnt a total surprise, as actor Jason Clarke had previously signaled that the author was OK with making Ellie the victim of that infamous Orinco tanker truck. In his explanation, Clarke noted that a supporting reason for the change to Pet Sematarys crucial fatality was the obvious issue of Gages younger age not exactly being the best choice for a cinematic villain. Sure enough, that reasoning seemed to pan out when Stephen King himself was contacted by The New York Times to discuss the big change to the 2019 adaptations narrative.

The decision certainly hasnt dampened Kings response to the Pet Sematary remake, as the author loved the film so much, he dropped some pretty colorful language stating as much. For those of you who are worried this is an exercise in diplomacy, designed to play ball until the films initial release has passed, lets not forget Stephen Kings response to The Dark Towers release. While he was initially diplomatic about the films decisions pertaining to approaching his legendary series, King did eventually point out the obvious flaws in that would-be franchises launch.

At this moment though, it looks like Stephen King not only enjoys Pet Sematarys modern revamp, but that his excitement comes even after a pretty big change was made to his original story. With that stamp of approval now affixed to the film, it might have the potential to boost its standings during its second weekend of release, which in turn might only help bring more of the authors work to the big screen.
