I Left Avengers: Infinity War Liking One Character Way More Than Before

SPOILER WARNING: Massive spoilers follow for Avengers: Infinity War. See that movie at least one more time before checking back here.

One of the best things about the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the characters. It's what keeps people going back for more to the point where putting all of these characters in one place led to Avengers: Infinity War making $1 billion dollars in less than two weeks. The MCU has made worldwide icons out of B-list superheroes, turning a guy like Captain America (Chris Evans) into a total badass or forging a critically acclaimed movie around a talking tree and raccoon. It only makes the somewhat underwhelming Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) all the more apparent.

Or, at least, he was underwhelming before Infinity War happened and shot Doctor Strange up my list of favorites like a damn rocket.

It's not that I didn't like Doctor Strange before. I liked him just fine, but I was more attracted to the magical world that he was operating in than the character himself. I think it's fair to say that Stephen Strange was no Captain America, Iron Man, or Star-Lord. Similarly, his movie is just fine, too. It's not bad, but it's about mid-tier Marvel. It was an origin film that did its job and set up a future franchise character that I'd want to see again but could wait. Little did I know that Doctor Strange's next major appearance (excluding cameos) would give him a major shot of adrenaline and prove just what value he has in the universe removed from the confines of a limited origin movie.

Part of the reason that I think Doctor Strange works so well in Infinity War is that we are seeing him at close to his max potential. Ultimately, none of these MCU heroes are meant to be by themselves. Like any great toy box, they are supposed to be played with together, and the real power comes from those combinations. In Infinity War, we see how Doctor Strange is supposed to play in the grander scheme of things. He's a defender of the realm with the multiverse on his shoulders, taking charge of the situation and recruiting the people he needs. This is exactly what his origin film was setting him up to be, and it's so much more fun than watching his ghost read books.

Another big part of Strange's appeal comes in pairing him off with the rest of the MCU, in this case, his perfect match: Tony Stark. The two are very similar characters and their egos continually clash throughout their time together. This pairing works far better than anything in Doctor Strange, in which most of the side characters are forgettable (with the exception of Wong, who also gets an Infinity War boost). Whereas Strange pretty much ran the show, in Infinity War Strange is forced to meet his match, giving his personality a little extra fire.

It's also nice to see Strange performing his duties as the wizard defender of the universe. His whole origin film was about accepting that role, and now we get the actual meat of what this job entails. Turns out that it involves being ice cold, such as when Strange promises Stark that he won't ever give up the Time Stone even if Stark and Spider-Man are in danger. The burden of the universe is just too great to worry about a few lives.

Of course, Strange does end up trading the Time Stone for Stark's life, which only highlights one the most awesome parts of the movie: Strange's vision of the future. Using the Time Stone, Strange goes deep sci-fi and looks to the future of over 14 million timelines in which they battle Thanos. They only ever win once. Strange is the only person who knows how they beat Thanos, so all the pressure is on him to make sure that it happens exactly like how he saw it. That means letting the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy lose, wiping out half of reality -- himself included. That takes a lot of guts, but Strange was willing to put himself aside for the greater good of the universe.

And, of course, we can't talk about Strange without bringing up the action. Strange is an MVP in this movie. His powers have grown exponentially from being barely able to conjure a shield. Now he has a whole arsenal of new spells at his disposal, like comic book favorites such as the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak (those red straps that held back Thanos) and the Images of Ikonn (all the clones he made). Strange was also a great team player, supporting other heroes with portals and platforms to jump around. He went mano a mano against Thanos for crying out loud, turning a black hole into a bunch of butterflies! He's still got those sparkly shields and whips, but this is Doctor Strange as he should be.

Avengers: Infinity War was a packed film, with plenty of other characters that needed attention, but I'm glad that Strange was given his due. Despite that ending saying otherwise, I'm way more excited to see what Doctor Strange 2 has in store. Plus, I NEED more of the Cloak of Levitation, the movie's other MVP.

Venom Could Have An Especially Big Opening Weekend

We're entering the final months of 2018, and there are still a few superhero movies left to entertain audiences. Aquaman and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse are closing things out in December, but we're only a few weeks away from finally seeing Venom. Not only is this the eponymous character's second live action appearance, following 11 years after Spider-Man 3, the movie is also delving into Eddie Brock's origin story without the Web-Slinger present, so many are interested to see how this adaptation turns out. That being said, if current box office predictions are correct, Venom could become the biggest October opening of all time (not adjusted for inflation).

Early box office tracking initially put Venom at making between $30-$50 million opening weekend domestically, while last month that range increased to $55-$85 million. Now THR has passed along that Venom looks to be settling down for a potential $65 million debut, although Sony is being more conservative with its estimates, instead suggesting a $55-$65 million launch. If Venom manages to hit the $56 million mark or beyond in its first couple days, it will surpass the previous domestic October record holder Gravity, which drew in $55.8 million opening weekend, while other October heavy hitters from recent years include The Martian and Paranormal Activity 3. Venom's biggest competition that opening weekend is Warner Bros' A Star is Born, which earned critical acclaim out of the Toronto International Film Festival, but is predicted to come in second place with between $28-$30 million domestically (Warner Bros says it will be closer to $25 million).

Superhero movies are usually released in the summer movie season or the November/December period, but as we've seen with the likes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Deadpool and Black Panther, these kind of blockbusters can be successful in more unusual times of the year. If these early predictions prove correct, Venom will count itself among that successful group, although how it ends up being received critically is a different matter. Nevertheless, Venom is one of the more well-known characters from the Marvel mythology, which ideally will help put butts in seats, and if Venom meets or exceeds these estimates, that increases the chances of a sequel moving forward.

Inspired by the Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes comic book storylines, Venom will show reporter Eddie Brock becoming bonded with his symbiote and putting his new abilities to the test against the Life Foundation, which is led by Carlton Drake and has other symbiotes lurking behind its walls. Along with Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, the movie's cast includes Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate and Woody Harrelson.

When movie fans go to the theater, they often want to see film favorites and the biggest titles on the best formats possible to maximize the theatrical experience. That is, if your finances permit such actions. For many audiences, that means seeing movies in IMAX. It was a big year for IMAX in 2018, as audiences flocked to theaters to see movies in the large format. Now that the year is at a close, IMAX has announced the 10 highest-grossing IMAX movies of 2018. Check them out below:

As you might expect, there is a lot of overlap with the highest-grossing IMAX movies of 2018 and the biggest worldwide releases overall with seven films overlapping. Six of the top 10 highest-grossing IMAX films of 2018 also featured IMAX DNA, meaning they were shot with IMAX cameras or took advantage of the IMAX aspect ratio on IMAX screens.

Naturally the $2+ billion grossing Avengers: Infinity War tops the list as audiences the world over wanted to see that decade in the making event film on the biggest and best screen possible.

A lot of the other titles make sense too. Black Panther was a phenomenon and Venom outperformed everyone's expectations. And if you're going to see a movie like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom or The Meg, which are about massive prehistoric creatures, you want to see them on an IMAX screen to get the full effect of that scale. The same goes for an action extravaganza like Mission: Impossible Fallout.

There are some entries on this list that are somewhat surprising and serve as a reminder of how well some of these movies did overseas, even if their domestic performance was unremarkable. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is in 18th place on the domestic charts with only $155.3 million according to Box Office Mojo, but thanks to its international take, it has made $613.7 million worldwide and it apparently did quite well for itself on IMAX screens.

Also notable is Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One. Despite not being in the top 10 at the box office domestically or worldwide, that film finds itself at number five on IMAX's highest-grossing 2018 films. To me that says that the people who wanted to see it really wanted the most immersive experience possible and thus opted for the premium format. And regardless of your feelings about the film, it is the kind of movie that demands a great theatrical presentation.

Another film that made a late splash at the box office and one big enough to land it on this list was DC's Aquaman. That film has its sights set on a $1 billion worldwide take and it has clearly performed well early on IMAX screens.

2018 was a huge year at the box office, on track to be the biggest ever, due in large part to many of these films. But it was also a huge year for IMAX because for the first time ever IMAX surpassed $1 billion in worldwide box office revenue. With lots of huge titles headed to the large format next year, including those with IMAX DNA like The Lion King and Avengers: Endgame, IMAX, and the box office are poised for another huge year in 2019.
