How Spider-Man: Far From Home Can Wrap Up Marvel's Phase Three

How Spider-Man: Far From Home Can Wrap Up Marvel's Phase Three

The conclusion of Avengers: Endgame really did feel like the end of an era. The Marvel epic provided fitting closure for two of its core characters, it featured a massive battle sequence with just about every MCU character yet (hell, even Howard the Duck showed up) and could quite possibly become the highest grossing movie of all time. But Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has stood his ground on the fact that Spider-Man: Far From Home is the last film in MCU Phase 3, not Avengers: Endgame.

It doesnt make sense, does it? Whats our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man doing coming in, swinging past the small ocean of nerd tears Avengers: Endgame poetically manifested in us with its ending and closing this chapter of MCU history with his own movie? But after a look at the new spoiler-y trailer for Far From Home that came out this week, its starting to become more clear. There are some loose ends that Endgame didnt tie up that the next Spider-Man movie will address, thus closing out Phase 3 and the Infinity Saga. Heres why it makes sense for the summer release to end this chapter:

The Impact of EndgameAvengers: Endgame was so focused on Earth's Mightiest Heroes undoing Thanos snap and bringing closure to the stories of Tony Stark and Captain America that it glazed over one important impact of the whole situation: whats next after the giant upheaval that killed off half the population of the universe and then brought them back? While part of living creatures will be dealing with a world back at maximum population after mourning and picking up the pieces for five years, others will be coping with the time theyve lost and the changes to the world since they were snapped out of existence.

Spider-Man: Far From Home will need to address the situation a bit before Phase 4 can begin and framing the last MCU film through the heros world is a clever way for the studio to do this. As Jon Watts recently explained to Fandango, Peter Parker has the ground-level perspective into daily life that other heroes such as Thor or Hawkeye would have. He may be rolling with the Avengers now, but under the suit hes just a normal kid. He still needs to go to high school which means his movie needs to deal with the shift in dynamic of that post-Endgame.

Spider-Man: Far From Home makes sense as a Phase 3 movie because it should answer a bit of our curiosities about a changed world after the Avengers fiercest battle yet. Although it seems like most of Peters immediate friends (Ned, MJ, Flash, Betty) and Aunt May are dealing with the side of being snapped and coming back, they will come in from that unique perspective of what its like to come back to a world you were dusted from, whereas Endgame dealt with the people who were left alive. As audiences, we need both of those sides for the storyline to find balance about the events.

The Death of Iron ManSince the MCU started with Iron Man, the franchise has always been rooted in Robert Downey Jr.s Tony Stark. Avengers: Endgame didnt answer the question about how the franchise will move on sans Iron Man. Spider-Man: Far From Home is the perfect opportunity for the MCU to explore this, especially since Tony was established in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming as Peters mentor and Avengers father-figure. While as an audience we feel a bit lost about whats next for the franchise without our favorite playboy, billionaire, philanthropist, so will Spidey.

In fact, it looks like the theme of the movie will revolve around Peter coming to terms with Tonys great sacrifice and finding his place in the world without him being there to call up, bail him out or give him a pep talk. The trailer threw around the new Iron Man a couple times and will explore the hero as he tries to ignore his great responsibility to be a normal teenager. He can send him to voicemail, but he cant run from Nick Furys call to a big mission involving the Elementals and the Multiverse.

Spider-Man: Far From Home will answer one question that Avengers: Endgame just didnt have the time for: whats next for the Avengers Initiative? How does it look like now? Nick Fury is calling on Spider-Man this time around, so does that mean he will be a prominent figure in the MCU now? Will he be the new Iron Man? Maybe a new dynamic all together will form within the confines of Far From Home that will wrap up and bring closure to what started with Iron Man in 2008 and give us a hint about how we move forward.

The Next MCU SagaAnother aspect of Avengers: Endgame that doesnt make it feel like the definitive end to Phase 3 is theres still a lot up in the air where exactly the MCU is going next. The team may have assembled and taken down their ultimate enemy when they stopped Thanos from using the Infinity Gauntlet the second time, but we dont know enough about how thats changed things enough to know how it will mold into the next saga. Spider-Man: Far From Home for example seems to already be giving us a hint about just why we need it to clue us in.

The latest trailer sets up the Multiverse when Nick Fury explains that the snap (although its unclear which one) tore a hole in our dimension and Jake Gyllenhaals Mysterio is from one of the alternative worlds. This new detail made it especially clear to me why Spider-Man: Far From Home is an MCU bookend. The movie is building off the events of the MCU thus far, so it can be placed in the Infinity Saga category, but its also opening up a portal (quite literally) into the potential of what could be to come. Will the next phase revolve around the Multiverse? The set-up for Far From Home certainly seems to hint at it.

From here, Spider-Man: Far From Home looks to be a fitting last film in Phase 3. It does seem like a lot to cover in a Spider-Man sequel, but the new trailer seems to deliver on just about every front of touching on these unanswered questions that I didnt think it was capable of doing before, so Im confident it will fittingly be the end of the Infinity Saga and mark the impending beginning of a new one.

Spider-Man: Far From Home will spin its web in theaters on July 2, so be sure to keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more coverage.

The Black Panther Line That Was Essential To The Movie, According To Kevin Feige

The Black Panther Line That Was Essential To The Movie, According To Kevin Feige

Not every line of dialogue a screenwriter pens for a movie will end up making into the final cut. However, during Black Panthers development, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige made sure that Erik Killmonger Stevens last words before his death would not be altered in any way during shooting, as he felt that the entire movie could be built around them. When asked at what point he realized that Black Panther was going to attract a community that has been underserved in the superhero genre, Feige responded:

It was in those early discussions that we had with Ryan, that he had with Nate Moore, our executive producer at Marvel who brought him in to meet with us. And that amazing line, that he and his co-writer, Joe Robert Cole, wrote for Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) as he lay dying outside the vibranium mines looking over Wakanda. T'Challa says, I can try to heal you, and he says, Why, so you can lock me up? Just bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped ships, 'cause they knew death was better than bondage. That was in the first draft. It was one of the best lines we ever read. We said, There are going to be a lot of revisions, but don't touch that line. And Ryan said, That's the line I thought you'd tell me to cut. And we said, On the contrary, keep it and build more of the movie around it.

There are a lot of ways that Black Panther stood out from other superhero movies, Erik Killmonger being among them. Michael B. Jordan received heaps of praise for his performance as Killmonger, and the character has since been labeled by many as one of the Marvel Cinematic Universes best villains. But as Kevin Feige told THR, Killmongers final moment was instrumental to building the entire movie. Like any other major motion picture, Black Panther went through alterations, including a deleted Killmonger line before his death resulting in the movies ending being changed, but it was ensured that Killmongers last words about not wanting to be imprisoned was kept in, and that proved to be the right call.

Although the MCU has experienced a lot of success in the nearly 11 years since Iron Man came out, Black Panther stands out a particularly notable triumph. Besides being incredibly successful critically and commercially (its collected over $1.3 billion on the latter front), TChallas standalone feature has earned numerous accolades over the last couple months, including winning two Grammys and two SAG awards. Next up on Black Panthers awards season journey is the Academy Awards, where its been nominated in seven categories, including Best Picture. As for Killmonger, despite him dying, its been rumored that Michael B. Jordan could reprise the character in the future.

You can find out how Black Panther fares in the Oscars race when the 91st Academy Awards air on Sunday, February 24 on ABC. As for the future of the property, Chadwick Boseman and Letitia Wright will reprise TChalla and Shuri, respectively, in Avengers: Endgame this April. Black Panther 2 has also officially been given the green light, with Ryan Coogler returning to write and direct. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for updates on how the sequel is developing.

Another Spider-Man Spinoff Movie Is In The Works Over At Sony

Another Spider-Man Spinoff Movie Is In The Works Over At Sony

Sony is very much having its cake and eating it too when it comes to the Spider-Man mythology. In addition to teaming up with Marvel Studios on incorporating the Web-Slinger, his supporting cast and select members of his rogues gallery into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in recent years, Sony has also been working on a standalone Spider-Man-centric franchise, with Venom being the first entry of this creative endeavor. Over the last year, we've learned about other Spider-Man spinoffs that are being considered, and today brings word that the latest project in the works is centered around Cindy Moon, a.k.a. Silk.

According to Deadline, Sony and producer Amy Pascal are in early development on a Silk spinoff movie, but specific details are being kept under wraps. Created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, Cindy Moon was bitten by the same radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker. As a result, she gained similar arachnid-themed abilities as Peter, and while she's not as strong as Spider-Man, she is faster and her spider-sense (dubbed the "Silk Sense") is more powerful. Unlike Peter, who primarily relies on web-shooters, Silk can also shoot webbing out of her fingertips. This spinoff won't be the first time Cindy has been depicted on the big screen, as she was played by Tiffany Espensen in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War.

It could be a while until we learn if this Silk movie is officially moving forward or not, but if it's adapting Cindy Moon's comic book past, then it wouldn't be connected in any way to the Cindy we've already seen in the MCU. In the main Marvel comics universe, Cindy was trained in using her special abilities by Ezekiel, a mysterious businessman who had ritualistically gained powers similar to Spider-Man's and would later later cross paths with the Wall-Crawler. However, Ezekiel eventually locked Cindy in his underground facility to keep her safe from Morlun and the Inheritors (that's a whole other story), and because Ezekiel later sacrificed himself, she had been spent years alone. Peter Parker learned of Cindy's existence during the "Original Sin" storyline and freed her from captivity. Taking the identity Silk, Cindy has since jumped into the superhero game while also rebuilding her personal life. Obviously a Silk movie wouldn't be able to hit all of these narrative beats, but it might be interesting to follow a heroine who's been cut off from life for many years and must acclimate to how things have changed since she's been gone.

So far, the only confirmed Spider-Man spinoffs on the way from Sony are Venom and Silver & Black, although the latter was recently taken off the calendar in order for the writers to have more time perfecting the script. Silk joins Nightwatch and Morbius the Living Vampire as spinoffs that have been reported on, but it remains to be seen if they'll get the green light.

We here at CinemaBlend will be sure to let you know if there are any updates regarding this Silk spinoff, but for now, you can keep track of what movies are coming later this year by looking through our 2018 release schedule.

The Gross Part About Wearing A Corset, According To Emma Stone

The Gross Part About Wearing A Corset, According To Emma Stone

Thanks to social media and FilmStruck being shut down and Florida always doing Florida things, life in 2018 can be really rough. I'd complain but it sounds kinda stupid considering people a few hundred years ago were living without the internet, cars and frozen yogurt mix-ins and living with polluted water and corsets. How much that last one sucks has been on actress Emma Stone's mind a lot lately. The Academy Award winner recently filmed, The Favourite, a period drama about Queen Anne that required her to wear a corset, and spoiler alert, it was not only uncomfortable, it was gross.

"For the first month, I couldn't breathe... After about a month, my organs shifted because they have to. It was only temporary. It was gross... They've gone back... The bottom half of my stomach, I'm not a doctor, whatever is in there, went down that way, and I guess just my ribs stayed up."

The admission came on The Graham Norton Show during a larger roundtable discussion with Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law and Melissa McCarthy. Redmayne himself has played several parts that required him to wear a corset, and not surprisingly, he had some of his own troubles, as well. In short, it's apparently a time-consuming and uncomfortable experience. So, shout-out to all the people back in the day who went about their lives doing it every day.

The Favourite follows Queen Anne and Sarah Churchill. The two had an extremely close relationship during the Queen's reign in the early 1700s, but after Churchill's cousin Abigail showed up, an intense rivalry developed between the family members, with both women wanting to be the Queen's favourite. Emma Stone is playing the cousin, and it also stars Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Nicholas Hoult.

It's not really a surprise, by the way, that this conversation happened on The Graham Norton Show. The longtime TV presenter creates a fun, casual environment for his guests, which often leads to people having really honest conversations like this. It's a little less forced than your typical late night show and has a bit more of a Howard Stern vibe to it. In fact, that's where Chris Pine admitted he's been reading your penis-related tweets.

You can check out the corset portion of the Graham Norton interview in question below...

You can check out The Favourite when it hits theaters in the United States on November 23rd or in various other countries when it's released near the end of 2018 or the beginning of 2019.
