Doctor Strange's Director Has Left Twitter

It's been about almost two weeks since director James Gunn was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but the reverberations from that decision are still being felt throughout Hollywood. In the aftermath of James Gunn's firing by Disney over controversial old tweets, other directors have either scrubbed their accounts or left Twitter entirely, seemingly seeing the writing on the wall. Now another MCU helmer has decided to leave the social media platform: Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson. The director made that clear on Instagram, saying:

I've left twitter. But I'll stay here for now.

Although Scott Derrickson will still be active on social media through his Instagram account, he will no longer be on Twitter. The director did not give a specific reason for his exodus from the platform, and it is possible that he simply got tired of the cesspool that the platform often is, but the proximity to the James Gunn firing is probably not coincidence. It could be a solidarity thing with his fellow MCU director (he did repost the Guardians cast's open letter), but it may also be that he was concerned about some of his past tweets being drudged up and used against him in the future, and decided it was better to just play it safe and leave Twitter entirely.

Scott Derrickson follows several others who have all made statements or attempted to avoid similar fates as James Gunn in recent days. Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson didn't leave the platform, but he purged his account by deleting some 20,000 tweets. Over in the DCEU, future Nightwing director and previously active Twitter user Chris McKay also deleted his personal account in the past week. Actress Selma Blair deleted her Twitter account, and like Scott Derrickson, maintained her Instagram, but she specifically said that the move was made in solidarity with James Gunn.

If I had to guess, Scott Derrickson is the latest Hollywood name, but he won't be the last to quit Twitter as this unfortunate saga continues to unfold. This may become the new normal as directors and others in the industry try decide that it simply isn't worth it to use Twitter and risk losing out on a job because of a social media snafu. The stream of consciousness model of Twitter means that any old thing you tweet could be taken out of context and viewed differently than the manner in which it was intended, or even worse, weaponized against you. Scott Derrickson is a talented director and he wouldn't want an old tweet to ruin his career, so this is probably a smart move.

As far as Scott Derrickson's future in the MCU and Doctor Strange 2, that, like most of the MCU in Phase 4, remains a mystery. But Scott Derrickson sounds like he wants to make it and he already has some ideas for the sequel. On the James Gunn front, we are still waiting to hear who Marvel will hire to replace the director on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, if that movie even happens at all now. The Favourite's Olivia Colman Says Kissing Co-Star Rachel Weisz Was Like 'Winning The Lottery'

The Favourite has been out for a few weeks now, and if you've caught the historical-oriented flick you may already know it delves into delicious romance between Olivia Colman's Queen Anne and Rachel Weisz's Lady Sarah, with some Emma Stone thrown in for good measure. Colman recently revealed that kissing her co-star could have been way worse, noting it was like she had "won the lottery." She said in a recent interview:

I tend to try and avoid anything like [the sex scenes] because it makes me giggle. I get really embarrassed. But we had two or three weeks of rehearsals beforehand. So, we couldn't be embarrassed in front of each other because we had rolled on the floor and giggled and eaten together and shared everything -- become genuinely very good friends. So when we had to do this, it was like 'Come on, we can do it.' Snogging is fine, snogging Rachel Weisz is like you've won the lottery!

According to Olivia Colman, both she and Rachel Weisz spent enough time together prior to filming their love-making scenes for The Favourite that kissing her co-star ended up being an easy and fun shared experience.

If you are going to have to make out with someone on the big screen, it might as well be with someone you really like.

The Favourite follows Olivia Colman as Queen Anne, a ruler who not particularly interested in ruling and more interested in having fun. At the start of the movie, she spends a lot of time with her advisor Sarah, who takes control of a lot of the political machinations within her kingdom. Sarah is able to maintain this power by keeping Queen Anne happy, in and out of the bedroom, although she does seem somewhat fond of Queen Anne. All of that changes when Sarah's distant relative Abigail shows up on the scene. Abigail has been living a life of poverty and will do anything to find a way out.

That also includes keeping Queen Anne happy in the bedroom. While Olivia Colman says scenes with Rachel Weisz were filmed without incident, on the other hand, when it came time for Emma Stone's Abigail to enter the foray, things got a bit stickier, no pun intended. Speaking to the BBC program Sounds, Colman revealed that she and Emma Stone really struggled with their sex scene.

The other bit, I don't know if I'm allowed to say it --being fingered by Emma Stone -- that was on the verge. We really struggled with not giggling about that. Because there's also a camera crew!

Emma Stone has previously spoken out about sex scenes in The Favourite, discussing why she chose to get nude on camera for the first time. She said late last year that Olivia Colman didn't want her to get naked and that she was not pressured but that she felt her body being in the scene fit the movie better.

I had the sheet up around me, and as we were shooting it and we did a few takes, I said, 'Can I please just be [naked]?' I think it's going to give Sarah something to look at when she sees that I'm not just under the sheet covered up. Olivia was like, 'No, don't do it!' Yorgos [Lanthimos] was like, 'Are you sure that's what you want to do?' And I was like, 'Absolutely.'

Knowing what we know now from both female actresses, it's easy to see how it took a few takes to make that Favourite scene work---it was perhaps, not their "favorite."

Still, Olivia Colman only has nice things to say about director Yorgos Lanthimos, noting that the script was so solid she basically took all of her cues from it; which is good, because Colman also said she basically knew nothing about Queen Anne before embarking on filming The Favourite.

The script was so great. I just went from the script. Which I know sounds basically like I'm lazy.

If you've seen The Favourite, the comedic narrative does take some cues from the real-life history of Queen Anne and Sarah Churchhill, whose relationship really did turn sour, after which a new woman, Abigail Hill, sought to be of influence in Queen Anne's court. Rumors of lesbian romance have largely remained rumors in the years after Queen Anne's reign.

As a movie, some of the events that play out on the big screen are accurate, although director Yorgos Lanthimos has been clear in the press leading up to the movie that "a lot aren't" accurate. Still, all three women in the movie (and a side shoutout to Nicholas Hoult) put in great performances, and The Favourite has already been on a lot of awards shortlists this year. Although some historical movies have been dinged for accuracy this year, The Favourite has largely been seen as more of a comedy than an accurate biopic and has escaped such accuracy notice for the most part.

Coming up, The Favourite will have a showing at this year's Golden Globes Awards. The flick has been nominated for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. In addition, Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone have all landed nods. You can see whether or not the film will end up being a big winner very soon. In fact, the 76th Annual Golden Globes will officially be airing this Sunday night, only on NBC.

Oscar nominations aren't out yet and there are a few other nominations still set to be announced, but we'll be sure to keep you posted as the awards season progresses this year.
