Star Wars Episode IX's Title Has Been Revealed, And It's Epic

There is arguably no film franchise quite as beloved as Star Wars. George Lucas' colorful galaxy has delighted moviegoers for decades, resulting in generations of hardcore fans. And with Disney acquiring Lucasfilm, the past few years have come with new releases, expanding the space opera through spinoffs and main installments. The latter have considerably higher stakes, and J.J. Abrams will end the current trilogy and overall Skywalker Saga with his mysterious Episode IX.

The movie might be coming this December, but Star Wars has been keeping its cards close to the chest regarding the film's contents. Furthermore, we haven't even been privy to its title or any footage. But that changed with this week's annual Star Wars Celebration, which debuted the Episode IX's official title (and first teaser). It is called The Rise Of Skywalker.

Does anyone else have chills? Tons of potential titles have been thrown around in the year and chance since The Last Jedi arrived in theaters to subvert fan expectations. Given the high stakes Episode IX, it seemed like just about any potential title could come to fruition-- especially as Disney and Lucasfilm kept their secrets from the general public.

But the most popular theorized titles for Episode IX did not include The Rise of Skywalker, giving the epic space opera to get yet another surprise over on the rabid fanbase. Considering Luke's fate in The Last Jedi, no one really expected him to be name checked in the next movie. Luke seemingly perished after Force Projecting to Crait for the final battle. While we expected him to return as a Force Ghost in The Rise of Skywalker, the title may tease an even meatier role for the franchise hero.

Of course, The Rise of Skywalker might not only reference Luke. The movie will end the Skywalker Saga forever, which (timeline wise) started when we met a young Anakin in Phantom Menace. The first trailer teased a strong connection to the franchise's past, as it ended on The Emperor's iconic laugh. So it doesn't seem out of question that both Anakin, Luke, Leia, and perhaps even more characters are being referenced in the film's recently revealed title.

Overall, it looks like Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be going new places for the current trilogy, and has an ambitious scope as the finale in a nine-film narrative. The trailer and title were debuted in the final moments of the Episode IX panel at Star Wars Celebration, and the cast and crew revealed plenty juicy bits of information. J.J. Abrams teased a time jump since the events of The Last Jedi, allowing the characters to get both their bearings and some new duds for the battle to come. Furthermore, it looks like The Rise of Skywalker will keep the current cast largely together, rather than separating their stories across various locations like the last two installments.

As for Luke's role, your guess is as good as mine. But clearly Mark Hamill's character and his lineage will have a part of play in the highly anticipated blockbuster. The Rise of Skywalker will end the story we've been following for decades, so the pressure is on.

Paul Bettany Reveals The Onscreen Death He Likes The Most

Warning: The following contains massive spoilers for Solo: A Star Wars Story and Avengers: Infinity War!

There are some actors who are just known for having memorable deaths onscreen. While it's hard to argue that Sean Bean is still the king of agonizing character deaths, Paul Bettany is racking up an impressive death count in his own right. The actor has roles in two of this year's biggest movies, Avengers: Infinity War and Solo: A Star Wars Story and his characters die in each of them, more than once in Infinity War. Willing to answer a macabre question, Paul Bettany revealed which of his recent character deaths is his favorite, saying:

Ooooh, I don't know. I think that being murdered by the love of your life [Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen] because you're asking them to is pretty moving stuff that they wrote for us.

I think most people would agree with Paul Bettany's pick here. It is truly hard to argue that Vision's deaths in Infinity War don't pack a bigger emotional punch than Qi'Ra killing the villainous Dryden Vos in Solo. And while seeing Thanos crush Vision's skull and watching his body go gray is brutal, the death at the hands of Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch is by far the most heartbreaking. As Paul Bettany points out to GQ, that whole scene between the two characters is incredibly moving and it really is as great a death as any character could hope for.

Vision asking something no one should ever have to ask of a loved one and her having to commit this act of mercy and salvation is incredibly agonizing and played beautifully in the film. It is made all the more tragic when Thanos reverses it, only for Vision to be killed again and discarded by the Mad Titan, making the lovers' sacrifice all for naught. Vision's death was just one of the major gut punches in a film that ended with a barrage of them and depending on your perspective, it may not even be the saddest (Peter Parker's death is rough), but it did have the best build.

We'll have to wait and see if somehow, thanks to a Captain Marvel rescue and some Doctor Strange wizardry, Paul Bettany's Vision is brought back to life, to die another day in Avengers 4 or beyond.

As for his Star Wars demise, Dryden Vos's death in Solo didn't mean as much to us because he was a villain we had just met and we had little to no emotional attachment to him. His death, while fun, also came in a battle with Qi'Ra, who we were rooting for. Ultimately, his death was really about Qi'Ra ascending within Crimson Dawn to become the right-hand woman of the enigmatic former Sith lord, Maul.

The Rock Takes A Shot At Doom, Gets Called Out By Doom's Twitter Account

Whatever metric you use, Rampage is already one of the more successful movies based on video games ever made. The vast majority of them have been so badly received, either critically or commercially, or both, that movies based on games are said by some to have a "curse." Dwayne Johnson recently posted to Twitter that it seemed that Rampage might be the movie that finally breaks the curse, but, in an attempt to be humble about it, he pointed out that his own career was not unsullied by said curse. After all, The Rock starred in the ill-fated Doom movie. The official Twitter account for Doom took notice of Johnson's slight and was none too pleased.

I'm guessing that the Doom Twitter account would like to just pretend that movie never happened and it is mostly upset with The Rock for even reminding people it exists. At the very least, does Dwayne really need to drag them through the mud like that? What did Doom ever do to him, besides being terrible I mean?

Doom came out in 2005 and starred Dwayne Johnson as the leader of a team of space marines on Mars fighting off an attack by other-worldly beings. While the game is a massively popular title that is in large part responsible for the popularizing of the first-person shooter genre, the movie adaptation won few fans, even though it tried to recreate the game experience with an interesting sequence in the film being done in first-person.

When Dwayne Johnson posted the tweet Rampage was sitting at 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, which would have made it the highest rated movie based on a video game according to the review aggregator. The overall score has dropped slightly since then and the movie now sits at an even 50%, which is still the best score for a movie based on a game, but it only puts Rampage a single percentage point ahead of the previous leader, last month's Tomb Raider which sits at 49%, though it also has several more reviews than Rampage currently does.

While it's difficult to argue that the curse is broken, with Rampage hovering somewhere around dead even among reviewers, the fact that the two best-reviewed movies based on video games are the two most recent, may be an indication that things are headed in the right direction. Regardless, there's apparently enough to enjoy about Rampage that half of the critics who have seen it have said so.

Maybe, like Tomb Raider, Doom will get another chance somewhere down the line. The game series recently saw a very popular entry which has given the brand new life, maybe that can be the catalyst for a potential new movie that can help wipe the bad one from memories so The Rock doesn't need to talk smack about it anymore.
