Spike Lee Made BlacKkKlansman A Comedy Because Of Six Specific Words

Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman stands as one of the best movies of 2018, and part of what makes it so fascinating is its approach to tone. The film deals with serious issues (like racism, terrorism, and social change) that are as present in our current world as they were during the featured time period, but it notably tackles them with a comedic bent and great wit. While the story could have potentially been told many ways, it's ultimately very much a comedy -- and it was an approach that the director cemented as soon as he heard the high concept pitch from producer Jordan Peele:

It was inherit in the premise. Jordan Peele pitched me this in six words: Black man infiltrates the Klu Klux Klan. I would use the word absurd. The absurdity and the humor is there because it comes from the pitch.

The subject of BlacKkKlansman's tone was the first that came up when I had the immense pleasure of recently hopping on the phone with Spike Lee to talk with him about his movie. I inquired if the approach was something that had to be slowly carved out, and had possibly gone through evolution from its earliest development, but that apparently wasn't the case. Lee knew it was going to be a comedy as soon as he heard Jordan Peele's six-word pitch and recognized the immense absurdity in the tale.

Of course, what only makes the story crazier is that it's based on a true story -- the epitome of "stranger than fiction." Ron Stallworth, as portrayed by John David Washington in the film, was a real Colorado Springs, Colorado police officer who successfully orchestrated an undercover operation that saw him become a card-carrying member of the Klu Klux Klan. It's a movie that certainly has its serious dramatic moments (including the brilliant gut-punch ending), but a smart script by Spike Lee, Kevin Willmott, Charlie Wachtel and David Rabinowitz, and a fantastic ensemble cast make it more often than not a riot.

Fans of Spike Lee will be quick to note that this isn't the first time that the filmmaker has approached darker stories that feature big laughs -- and Lee also made a point of it during the interview. While BlacKkKlansman is special in its own right, the writer/director has used the tonal approach in the past to fuel some of his best work. He explained,

I've done it before. Do The Right Thing is very serious subject matter, so was Malcolm X, and there's a lot of humor in both of those films. They had the same editor, Barry Alexander Brown, great editor. So, we've done it before, and it's been done before that! One of my favorite films is Dr. Strangelove, and what could be more serious than the extinction of humanity!

After a popular theatrical release during the summer, BlacKkKlansman is now coming back into conversation not only because of award season, but because of its new home video release. Fans and first timers can now find the movie available at their local retailers on digital, Blu-ray and DVD. Yes, The Russo Brothers Regret Filming Infinity War And Endgame Back-To-Back

Most movies have a few years between the initial film and a sequel. A movie as massive as Avengers: Infinity War probably should have earned Joe and Anthony Russo a year-long vacation before they even started thinking about Avengers: Endgame, its mega-sized follow-up. And yet, the brothers already had agreed to film the two stories back-to-back, so that they could be released in theaters a year apart. When CinemaBlend asked the Russos what they would change about the process, now that they are a year removed from it, and Anthony Russo candidly admitted to us:

We wouldnt shoot them back-to-back. [Laughs]

Hindsight is 20/20 in a situation like this, and Anthony Russo is likely feeling the enormous weight of carrying two massive and hugely anticipated Avengers movies over the finish line under an intense deadline. Does he wish that he and his brother, Joe Russo, had more time to develop their process and perfect visual effects? Of course.

But the fact that they did agree to shoot the footage all at once also meant that the brothers and their collaborators didnt have time to let the reaction to Avengers: Infinity War affect their approach to Endgame. They already were too far into the process to make any sweeping changes to the pending sequel based on how Marvel fans reacted to Thanos ultimate triumph. Anthony Russo elaborated:

I think the challenge for all of us was finding the balance between the two films. Because each film is so complex on its own that sometimes considering both of them was a bit overwhelming. So we looked for opportunities in the process to separate the two so that our brains could be fully focused on the narrative. While the films have a connection, as the Marvel films do, they are distinct stories.

Putting more time between the films might have allowed Joe and Anthony Russo to better process what worked about Avengers: Infinity War, and what theyd want to change about Avengers: Endgame, if anything. The back-to-back nature of the experiment meant that they already were deep into preparation on Endgame long before Infinity War surfaced. This created a dichotomy, as Avengers: Infinity War Visual Effects Supervisor Dan DeLeeuw explained:

It was interesting because you're full in post while you're still shooting the first movie. And then it's your brains split. Usually you can hold a movie in your head. But now you're having to hold two movies in your head. And it's just kind of this schizophrenia thing that starts happening every once in a while.

Will it pay off? We know that Avengers: Infinity War worked. And the reason we were catching up with the Russos was to celebrate the fact that Infinity War earned a visual effects Oscar nomination. See if it wins at the Academy Awards on February 24. And then come back for Avengers: Endgame, in theaters on April 26.

How Margot Robbie Feels About Getting Naked In Movies

Margot Robbie's acting profile has steadily risen over the past several years. In that time, she's taken on a wide range of roles, playing a DC member of the Suicide Squad, a problematic U.S. Olympian, Jordan Belfort's lover in The Wolf of Wall Street, famous Tarzan character Jane Clayton, and a naked character in a bathtub in The Big Short. She's recently played a stripper in Terminal, and now she's speaking out about nudity and sexual power in films, and how she feels about nudity in particular roles. As she has been naked on film before, she's not opposed, but she says there needs to be a motivation and self-awareness for the scenes to work. According to Robbie:

If I see it in a character that's using it as a weapon, or a tool, or doing it intentionally. Like in Wolf of Wall Street, she's wearing a short dress for a reason. She knows it's her currency. She's going to get her own. That feels empowering. When it's used in a way that there isn't that self-awareness, then it does feel like you're kind of taking advantage. And then I don't really vibe with it.

In The Wolf of Wall Street, Margot Robbie's character is in various states of undress throughout the movie. Margot Robbie's character Naomi --spoilers!-- starts out as the other woman. However, after Jordan Belfort's wife finds out about the relationship, she becomes his wife. Through part of the movie, there's always the feeling that if she wants to keep the decadent lifestyle she must keep Belfort happy, and that shows onscreen early on. Eventually the character no longer needs to use her sexual commodity and decides to divorce him. In previous interviews, Margot Robbie revealed that she was given the option to not go fully nude for Wolf of Wall Street, but she chose to portray Naomi in a way that made her vulnerable. Robbie would also get naked in a bathtub for a bit part in The Big Short.

While she doesn't get naked in Terminal, her sexuality is still a commodity in the film, only this time around Margot Robbie had a say in what the character did with it. She also spoke with Yahoo about the pitfalls of being told what to do in Hollywood, especially when she was just breaking out as an actress.

I think it's also something that comes with age. Even if I wasn't doing the producing stuff, I would have started having those kinds of opinions, or being vocal with those opinions anyway. Just because I'm starting to get to the age of working on films pretty consistently for the past ten years. I do have an opinion, and I'm ready to be vocal about it. But at the beginning, to be honest, you're just so grateful that you even have a job that you don't want to rock the boat sometimes.

In Terminal, clearly Margot Robbie could be more vocal about her role. She was a producer on the movie, and she has spent the last several years gaining more autonomy in the industry through producer roles, including a Harley Quinn project. If there's more nudity onscreen in the future, it will likely be on her own terms.
