Bond 25 May Be Eyeing A Female Villain

The new James Bond movie is now moving forward with a confirmed star, a director, and a writer. Now it's only missing one major item, a good villain. The James Bond series has created some memorable screen villains over the years and the current word is that the one that has been created for the next Bond film will be female. It's also being rumored that Helena Bonham Carter is at the top of the list of candidates the studio is considering.

The rumor comes from an unnamed "insider" speaking to the Mirror, so get your salt and find a suitable grain to go along with this story. No details are included about exactly who this character is, but the source claims that Carter is the front-runner. It's also unclear if there have been any actual talks with the actress who played Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter movies, or if producers are still finalizing their priority list before beginning to engage anybody. It sounds like things are still in the wish list phase.

Another name that is on the alleged list is Angelina Jolie. The same insider reports that "everybody" thinks Jolie will get the part even though producers actually want Helena Bonham Carter. It's unclear exactly who "everybody" is if nobody outside of the studio knows who is being considered, and they want Carter.

If Bond 25 really is looking for a lead female villain it will be the first time in franchise history that a woman has held that position. We've seen several popular female henchmen (henchpersons?) like Grace Jones' May Day in A View to a Kill and Famke Janssen's Xenia Onatopp in Goldeneye. Sophie Marceau's character Electra King from The World is Not Enough is probably the closest thing we've seen to a lead female villain in the series so far, but she was at best a co-lead alongside Robert Carlyle's character. There's no mention of any additional villain being looked for here, so while there will certainly be secondary villains, we may be looking at the first lead female villain in Bond film history.

Even if the female villain part of the rumor turns out to be true, it does sound like casting for the part is in the very early stages so anybody could end up in the role at this point. Filming for the movie isn't set to begin until December so the studio has plenty of time to find the right actress and to negotiate with whomever they want to get a deal done. Still, Helena Bonham Carter would be far from a terrible choice. We've seen her play the bad guy before and she tends to do it well, although she tends to play over-the-top villains frequently, and the current crop of James Bond films have been much more serious and grounded.

The first Kingsman movie was so well received that it resulted in a sequel. The sequel was not as well received. Kingsman: The Golden Circle didn't do badly. It was still financially successful, although it didn't do as well as the first film. However, the sequel was critically lambasted compared to the first movie. Taron Egerton now says that the negative response hit him hard, mostly because he put his all into the film. According to Egerton...

I think in some respects it was because I just gave everything to it. And then it was so quickly torn down. I did feel a bit of a sting. I think in some respects it wasn't a quite as well put together film as the first one but it certainly wasn't a bad film.

Nobody likes to have their work criticized, but when you're an actor that's going to be part of the game. Both professional critics and fans are going to tell you what they think and when they like the end result it's going to feel good, and when they don't it's not.

Taron Egerton tells the Empire Film Podcast that the negative response to Kingsman: The Golden Circle hit him especially hard because he specifically worked hard to make sure that he did everything he could to make the movie work, and the response apparently made him feel like he was unsuccessful in that regard.

Often bad reviews are no big deal to actors. Sometimes it's because the actor was never particularly invested in a project, but clearly, that was not the case here.

While Egerton admits that The Golden Circle had some issues, that it maybe wasn't "put together" as well (which potentially covers a lot of ground) that he still overall feels it's not a bad film. While a lot of critics would disagree with that sentiment, I wouldn't. While I certainly think the sequel isn't up to the standards set by Kingsman: The Secret Service, it's still a perfectly fun little movie. If you enjoyed the original there is certainly fun to be had with it.

It will be interesting to see how the response to Kingsman: The Golden Circle impacts the franchise. Several different films are currently being plotted, some with spinoff characters and some set in different time periods, as well as a proper sequel starring Taron Egerton. Certainly, these other sequels will be looking for a warmer reception than the one the last movie got, which could mean some reevaluation before they make it to the screen to make sure the films are up to snuff.

Nobody sets out to make a bad movie, but sometimes things just don't come together right and a bad movie is the result. It doesn't mean Taron Egerton, or anybody else involved in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, is bad at their jobs, just that sometimes things don't work out despite best intentions.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been placed on hold following the removal of its director, but his brother has spoken out on the state of the project. I don't really know yet what's going on with Guardians 3. I know that Disney still wants to make the movie. I know that they have every intention of using the script that my brother wrote. Obviously, that was a very unfortunate situation for everybody, most of all him, but I am also somebody who had been preparing to spend half a year making that movie and now that's up in the air.

Last July James Gunn was fired by Marvel Studios following the resurfacing of old social media posts in which he made jokes about the sorts of topics that one really should not joke about. While petitions were signed and many hoped that Disney would reconsider the decision, it appears definitive now that Gunn will not be back. However, one of the questions left outstanding was whether or not the company's separation from Gunn meant Marvel would not even use the script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 that Gunn had already written. Now, at least according to the writer/director's brother's comments to Tulsa World, it seems that Disney will be using the script, which means now they just need to find a director willing to direct that script, rather than finding one willing to write a new one.

Of course, that in itself will create its own set of potential problems. Having a new director step in to helm a property that was so clearly the emotional and creative work of one man can be a daunting task. Sean Gunn realizes that finding a director will be difficult, though he also points out that now that the movie has been officially delayed, the entire cast is now off doing other things and getting everybody's schedules free to make the sequel will be a task unto itself.

Obviously, I think it's a tricky proposition for them to find another director to step in --- and also the scheduling of a lot of other actors who are incredibly busy can't be easy. But I know that they plan on making the movie. I had not been contacted at all for a while, but I was recently contacted by Marvel saying, 'Yeah, we do plan to make this movie. We're just not sure when yet.'

Sean Gunn says the word from Marvel that the movie will be made was recent, so it appears that the current expectation is that this film will happen, even if nobody knows quite when. Originally, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. was expected to be the next movie following Spider-Man: Far From Home in early 2020. Whether it will still be the next film, and we'll just get a longer gap between movies or if something else will end up going into production first, remains to be seen.
