The Time Harry Potter's Tom Felton Tried To Convert His Co-Star To Slytherin

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has admitted that the best thing she ever wrote, on an airplane sick bag no less, was when she came up with the four Hogwarts houses. Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin provided not only a unique storytelling device, but have since become a way for fans to engage with the material, proudly displaying their houses on social media and wearing their house colors. Apparently the competitive nature of the Hogwarts houses extends to the cast of the films as well. Actor Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, recently attempted to convert his co-star, Matthew Lewis, to ditch the scarlet and gold and join Slytherin. Take a look:

It appears that Tom Felton made a valiant effort, even tempting Matthew Lewis with some sweet Slytherin swag in the form of a nice green backpack sporting the green and silver house crest. Yet despite Tom Felton's claim on Instagram that his co-star was close to converting, Matthew Lewis looks deeply unmoved by this gesture, remaining as stout a Gryffindor as ever. Neville Longbottom may have doubted his merits as a Gryffindor in the beginning, imagining he belonged in Hufflepuff instead, but over time he proved his courage as truly deserving to wear the scarlet and gold. The cunning Slytherin Tom Felton was prepared for this though, including the hashtag #gryffindork after Matt Lewis' refusal. Despite the neverending battle for house supremacy, for fans of the Harry Potter series, it is just cool to see these two actors reunited and having fun together in real life.

You can't really blame Matthew Lewis for not wanting to switch houses at this point and especially not to Slytherin. The serpent house has churned out more dark witches and wizards than any of the others, including the house's founder, Salazar Slytherin, who was a racist, and Tom Riddle, who wound up being a mass murderer. These are not great folks, so the stereotype exists for a reason. That said, there are some very fine Slytherin's throughout history, including Horace Slughorn and Merlin, and neither the movies nor the books treat the poor Slytherins very well, blanketing them all as bad and untrustworthy. Of course, Dumbledore has expressed concern that they sort students too soon, and the Sorting Hat itself has worried that dividing the students into houses is wrong altogether.

You can see the next adventure in the Wizarding World and the return to Hogwarts(!) when Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald apparates into theaters on November 16. That's likely one of the arguments used by Tom Felton, who played loyal Slytherin Draco Malfoy in the films, while trying to convince fellow Harry Potter castmate Matthew Lewis, aka Neville Longbottom, to switch houses. But unfortunately for Felton, house loyalty goes both ways, and Lewis didn't seem too keen on leaving Gryffindor.
