The Funny Reason Marvel Fans Are Mad About The New Venom Trailer

Sure, Tom Holland's Spider-Man is gearing up for an awesome appearance in Avengers: Infinity War this week, but there have been other developments in the spider-themed corner of the Marvel world, as well. Specifically, the latest official trailer for Ruben Fleischer's Venom finally dropped online after debuting at CinemaCon. The trailer has provided us with more information about Tom Hardy's take on Eddie Brock, but it has also spurred some furious (not to mention absolutely amusing) debate over the proper pronunciation of the word "symbiote." One fan took to twitter and wrote:

So, as that tweet plainly points out: it's not like symbiote isn't a word with actual pronunciation. It's a word, and the trailer hilariously gets it wrong, according to some fans of the comics. The main culprit here is Jenny Slate's character in Venom, as she specifically refers to the alien entity by pronouncing the word "symbiote" with a "bye" sound in the middle instead of a "bee" sound. As you can see from that tweet, this has Marvel aficionados scratching their heads and wondering what's going on. In the eyes of some of these Marvel fans: "sim-bee-oht" > "sim-bye-oht." Say it with me. Sim-bee-oht.

That tweet is not the only post to make this claim about the proper pronunciation of symbiote. Another fan similarly took to social media after concluding that he'd been pronouncing it correctly his whole life after hearing Jenny Slate say it so wrong. Check out that tweet, below.

Finally, because comedy so often relies on the rule of three, you can check out one more tweet mocking Venom's take on symbiote's pronunciation (not to mention the film's continuity), below.

Leave it to the internet to come up with the best jokes for instances like this. However, with all of that said, it's worth mentioning that there might be an in-universe rationale for why Jenny Slate says symbiote the way that she does. We don't know much about the true nature of her Venom character yet, so it's still entirely possible that the movie knows she's not saying it right. We will just have to wait and see.

Looking beyond the pronunciation situation, there's still plenty to get excited about in the Venom world. Taking inspiration from the Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes arcs, film will see Tom Hardy step into the role of investigative journalist Eddie Brock as he finds himself fused with the horrific alien monstrosity. As he begins to uncover new powers and abilities, he also forces himself try and control Venom as he transforms himself into a violent anti-hero.
